Introduction

Carlisle Canoe Club is an active canoe and kayak club with about seventy members participating in whitewater river running, playboating, Canadian canoeing (open canoeing), sea paddling, surfing, and canoe polo. Recent trips have included whitewater paddling in Norway and the French Alps, the Tryweryn in Wales, the Roy, Spean, Etive and Orchy in Scotland, sea paddling in the Hebrides, open canoeing on the Mountain River in Canada, flat water trips to Ullswater in the Lake District and much more (read about them in our newsletter). We have club sessions twice a week in summer on the River Eden in Carlisle, and once a week in trinity school swimming pool in winter. Every weekend in winter groups of more experienced paddlers go to paddle our local Cumbrian and Scottish rivers.

Join us!

Everyone, whether absolute beginner or expert creek boater, is welcome to join.

Beginners

If you have never canoed before then come along to our club sessions on the River Eden in Carlisle (where?) from April to September, or come along to our pool sessions in winter. We instruct from absolute beginner to British Canoe Union (BCU) 4* standard on the river, with beginner and intermediate groups every club session in the Summer. In winter we practice rolling, capsizing and getting wet in a nice warm swimming pool.

River sessions are at our clubroom round the back of the the Sands Centre in Carlisle (where?). We meet just before 6pm and get out about 8pm every Tuesday and Thursday from April to September (last session this year Thursday 26 September). The club provides kayaks (or open canoes), paddles, helmets, buoyancy aids and spray decks. You need to bring warm clothing to paddle in and a change of clothes - you will get wet! Good things to wear are fleeces, light waterproof cags, wooly jumpers, thermals if you have them, swimming shorts, and old trainers. Bad things to wear are jeans and cotton T-shirts or tracksuits. You don't need to join to come and try it - the first sessions FREE. Joining costs £23 for adults, £15 for 18 and under, and £35 for families. Club sessions, instruction and equipment are free to members. To get started, phone Ray on 07746 025187 or Tony on 07973 231844.

Pool Sessions run from 8pm to 9pm in Trinity School swimming pool (where?) during school term time only. You will need £2.50 per session. We provide kayaks, spray decks and paddles, just turn up or phone Ray on 07746 025187 or Tony on 07973 231844 for more details.

Experienced paddlers

Turn up at our club sessions or Saturday morning sessions on the Eden - we have a great eddyline for cartwheels, tail squirts and front enders. If its raining, phone Tom on 01228 561928 to find out what's happening or for info on anything on the club program. Join our email list and receive the club program every month.
